5.3. Syllabus

(27807) English Grammar I

[Introduction] What's grammar? National varieties. Standard and non-standard English. Register: variation according to use. Grammars of English.

[1] Grammatical units. Introduction to morphemes, words, phrases, and clauses.

[2] The structure of words. Inflection. Word formation: derivation, conversion, compounding. Minor types of word formation: reduplicatives, clippings, acronyms, blends.

[3] Introduction to word classes: Lexical words; function words; inserts; special classes of words: wh-words, single-word classes, numerals

[4] Lexical word classes: nouns; main verbs; adjectives; adverbs.

[5] Function word classes: determiners, pronouns, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, adverbial particles, conjunctions.

[6] Phrases. Types, structure and function. Noun Phrases; adjective phrases; verb phrases; adverb phrases; prepositional phrases.

[7] Clauses. Major clause elements: S, V, O, P, A. Major clause patterns: intransitive, monotransitive, copular, ditransitive, complex transitive. Simple, compound, and complex sentences. Sentence types and discourse functions.
